Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
New research reveals that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
