Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
