PSG Overcomes Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.
The Parisian club has now won the prestigious trophy on fourteen separate occasions.
Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.
The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring in the opening stages.
Yet, Marseille fired two times late to seize a surprise advantage. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.
In a breathtaking turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to send the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.
In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 penalty win.
The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
