Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
