Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Affirms Preparedness for Wartime Polls In Response to Comments from Trump.

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced he is ready to hold a presidential election amid the current war, provided that Ukraine's parliament and foreign partners allow it. This statement follows claims from Donald Trump that he was holding onto his position.

Obviously annoyed by the intervention from overseas, Zelenskyy stressed that "The decision for the population of Ukraine, rather than for individuals from foreign states, with all appropriate respect to our friends."

Nevertheless, he pledged to investigate options for carrying out a poll in the near future. "Since this issue is currently being posed by the President of the United States, our ally, I will answer directly: look, I am willing for elections," Zelenskyy stated on Tuesday evening.

"In addition, I am calling on ... the U.S. to support me, perhaps together with European partners, to provide safety for the polls, and then within the coming two to three months Ukraine will be able to hold the elections. I myself have the desire and preparedness for this," he continued.

The U.S. President's Comments and Ukrainian Legal Situation

These remarks were expressed by Trump in a wide-ranging interview released by Politico earlier on Tuesday. "They haven't had an election in a considerable period," claimed the U.S. president. "Consider this, they speak of a democracy, but it reaches a point where it's not a democracy any more."

Zelenskyy's presidential term expired in May of last year, but the country's fundamental law forbids elections in a time of wartime. Even, his political opponents have stated repeatedly that security and practical factors prevent holding an election amid the ongoing conflict.

"It would only create damage," said Serhiy Rakhmanin. "He's the commander-in-chief, and the country is in a position where we lack that option, whatever issues we might have with him. It would only benefit the adversary," he continued.

Logistical and Legal Obstacles

Zelenskyy pointed out two major problems that need solving: the practical challenge of allowing soldiers, millions of refugees, and those living under occupation to cast ballots, and secondly, how to legally hold elections while a state of war is active.

He sought counsel from allies on securing the elections, and from MPs on how to modify the law to enable a vote. "{I am waiting for suggestions from allies, I am waiting for proposals from our parliamentarians, and I am prepared to participate in the elections," affirmed Zelenskyy.

Broader Diplomatic Context

Zelenskyy made these remarks while returning to Ukraine after completing a diplomatic tour to various European capitals. This comes as the U.S. administration has reportedly been applying pressure on Kyiv to agree to a peace deal.

Earlier, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., suggested at a forum that Zelenskyy was extending the war due to worries of losing power. He also indicated that his father might "disengage" from Ukraine if the hostilities continues. "{It's not true. But it's not precisely wrong," responded Trump, when asked about his son's claim.

It has been suggested that the U.S. has floated the idea Ukraine should relinquish the Donbas region to achieve peace, a concession that would be extremely rejected within Ukraine. Furthermore, there is presently no evidence that Russia is prepared to sign any deal, including one that might seem favorable to Moscow.
